“INKWORKS
IS BACK”. For the James Bond trading card collectors January
1997 started with a big bang as “The Connoisseurs Collection
Volume II” from “Inkworks” hits the retail shops,
movie and collector fairs. This second volume is also know as the
70’s part of the three part collection and was mentioned on
the last card in the first set as a continuation to that set. And
continue it did, with all the numbers of basic and chase cards starting
were the last set had finished off. This time only five James Bond
movies from the 70’s are pictured on the cards, “Diamonds
Are Forever”, “Live And Let Die”, “The Man
With The Golden Gun”, “The Spy Who Loved Me” and
“Moonraker”. Again the cards were available in packs containing
seven cards or in a counter display box containing 36 packs. The wrappers
were manufactured in gold-foil and depicted Roger Moore artwork. Like
the previous volume, nine cards are used per movie, the others cards
depicting a “Ladies Gallery”, a “Heroes & Villains”
set and of course the Roger Moore Portfolio. Again the last card is
an introduction to the next volume.

Display Box Volume Two & Wrappers" |
With
fans still searching for that first chase set? “Inkworks”
manufactured a follow up to the “Women Of Bond” chase
cards, again it was nine foil-etched cards containing sexy pictures.
This time featuring beautiful shots of Jill St John as Tiffany Case
and Lana Wood as Plenty O’ Toole in “Diamonds Are Forever”,
Jane Seymour as the mysterious Miss Solitaire and Gloria Hendry as
Rosie Carver in “Live And Let Die”, Maud Adams as Andrea
Anders and Britt Ekland as Mary Goodnight in “The Man With The
Golden Gun”, Barbara Bach as Major Anya Amasova in “The
Spy Who Loved Me”, Lois Chiles as Dr. Holly Goodhead and Corinne
Clery as Corinne Dufour in “Moonraker” and many others.
To coincide with the previous card numbering, the numbering continues
from W10 thru W18 and the cards were randomly inserted into 1/11 packs.

The
James Bond “Movie Poster” chase cards are continuing from
“Diamonds Are Forever” thru “Moonraker”, this
time there was only five, one for each of the 70’s movies featured
in the second set. Again each metal-foil card shows the original movie
poster. The card numbering continues from P07 thru P11 and as before
randomly inserted in 1/24 packs. These cards are really beautiful
but the gold coating is so very fragile.

And
as you already may have guessed, the “Golden Touch” chase
card is Back In Action. This time the gold-foil,
sculpted and embossed card featured Roger Moore in a scene from “The
Man With Golden Gun”. As in the previous series the golden touch
card was strictly limited and only inserted into 1/108 packs. A very
bizarre thing happened during the printing process of this Golden
Touch chase card, some of the cards were given a platinum finish and
were accidentally inserted into packs. Read more about this incident
later in Volume III.
To
promote the second volume of the Connoisseurs Collection, “Inkworks”
issued a double sided sell sheet and a promotion card P2. The main
title on the sell sheet was “BOND IS BACK”. When manufacturing
the promotion card P2, “Inkworks” used a still depicting
Roger Moore in an action scene on board of the Stromberg tanker Liparus.
This action scene came from the movie “The Spy Who Loved Me”,
the third James Bond movie starring Roger Moore as agent 007. The
promotion cards are on sale for peanuts, but the sell sheet is another
story, these are really hard to find these days..
At
the time, the chase card retail prices were high, about 8€ for
each “Women Of Bond” card and 10€ for a “Movie
Poster” card. To own one of the “Golden Touch” cards
you had to lay down 25€ or more. Now prices are much lower via
eBay.
