Since the
release of “GoldenEye” there was nothing that could stop
the Bond mania. Pierce Brosnan had a contract for four movies, in
his second role as agent 007 he has to stop a media mogul's plan to
induce war between China and the UK in order to obtain exclusive global
media coverage. Inkworks had hit the jackpot with the connoisseurs
trading card collection and to coincide with the release of the new
James Bond movie “Tomorrow Never Dies” they released a
brand new trading card set. The basic set contained 90 full colour
pictures following the whole movie in trading card format. The cards
were randomly packed by eight in blood red wrappers, probably referring
to the blood red posters. The wrappers were manufactured in blood
red metal foil, embossed with the “Tomorrow Never Dies”
logo. The counter display box contained 36 packs. When opening the
box, the lid could be folded to reveal a cut-out of James and Paris.

“Inkworks”
didn’t save on promotion costs for this new card series. They
produced not less than three different promotion cards P0, P1, P2
and a superbly designed sell-sheet.
The announcement
on the sell-sheet reads "BOND IS BACK"
and shows a picture of Pierce Brosnan as 007 and Terri Hatcher as
Paris Carver printed on a red and yellow background. Actually this
sell-sheet is a tough one to get hold of, a similar to the one shown
here below was sold on the 28th May 2008 on eBay for 17,28€.

As an example
to the previous series it was a must for “Inkworks” to
create some new chase sets. For the collectors it’s all by all
acceptable, this time there are only 14 chase cards to collect. The
first chase set existed of nine puzzle cards. Together the nine cards
compose a picture of Terry Hatcher as Paris Carver holding a glass
of champagne.
Terri Hatcher was born in California on the 8th December 1964. She
was pregnant during the shooting of “Tomorrow Never Dies”.
Terry became world famous for her role as Lois Lane in the famous
TV-series “The New Adventures Of Superman”. The puzzle
chase cards are numbered from T1 thru T9 and were randomly inserted
in 1/11 packs. The reverse of each card contains a James Bond trivia
question with the answer printed upside down. No cheating 007.
"Terri
Hatcher 9 Card Puzzle Chase Card Set"
The
second chase set has of only four cards. The cards follow the same
style as the “Women Of Bond” chase cards in the connoisseurs
trading card collection. Displayed on the cards are the four leading
Bond Girls from the movie, Michelle Yeoh as Wai Lin, Terri Hatcher
as Paris Carver, Cecilie Thomsen as Inga Bergstrom and Daphne Deckers
as the Public Relations Lady for Carver Media. The Bond girls were
a little harder to collect than the puzzle cards as they were only
inserted into 1/24 packs, let’s say one card per box and numbered
as W1 to W4.
"Tomorrow
Never Dies Women Of Bond”
The last
chase card and probably the most difficult one is the “Bond
Dressed To Kill” card. This card was randomly inserted in only
1/108 packs. Meaning that you had to buy at least three boxes and
some mothers luck to obtain this card. This card frequently pops-up
on eBay for very reasonable prices. The card is numbered as B1.
For the
diehard card collectors, there are two different uncut sheets to collect.
One containing the nine Terri Hatcher puzzle cards and a second one
showing three different promotion cards, this uncut promo card sheet
was issued by Suncoast.
Shown
here below, this nine card uncut sheet is a real piece of artwork
ready to be framed. Sometimes it pops up on eBay for a reasonable
price. Notice the numbering in the lower right corner, this is sheet
320 from only 500 pieces.
"9 Card Uncut
Sheet"
To store
and protect this exciting trading card set, the card company manufactured
a beautiful collectors binder. This time the binder is finished in
high quality blood red scuba vinyl, emblazoned with the world famous
007 Gunlogo and the silver foiled movie title “Tomorrow Never
Dies”.
“Tomorrow
Never Dies Exclusive Binder"
To
celebrate this unique opportunity “Inkworks” gave the
trading card collectors a chance to win one of the limited edition
Aston Martin DB5 die-cast replicas from Danburry Mint. Among the many
cards you could find a “Sorry Card” with the following
note “Sorry, you are not an Instant Winner”, or if the
gods where on you’re side you may find an “Instant Winner
Card”. This lucky card was randomly inserted in only 1/3600
packs or 1/100 boxes. Like most of the collectors know, the detail
on a Danburry Mint replica is stunning, super detailed even to the
tiny telephone mounted into the doors arm-rest. The retail price for
this replica was about 175€. If that wasn’t a stimulation
to buy cards, or should I say boxes? Did you belong to the lucky collectors?
Then you should have seen one of the two cards shown here below. The
Instant Winner Card and the Second Chance Drawing.
