THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (Inkworks)

Release Date
10 November 1999

Set Configuration:
90 Base cards
36 Packs per box
7 Cards per pack
10 Boxes per case

Pierce Brosnan was back as secret agent 007 in “The World Is Not Enough”, his third James Bond adventure. Not from a Fleming title, but the Bond family motto as seen in one of the earlier movies and in the Fleming book “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. The world premiere was announced for the 19th November 1999 and I was lucky to obtain two tickets for the movies premiere in Holland, they were given to me by the world famous beer company “Grolsch” who sponsored this event. As a tie-in to the new James Bond movie, “Inkworks” produced a complete new set of Premium UV coated trading cards. As usual the basic set contained 90 different cards depicting the whole movie in trading card format. This time each pack contained only 007 cards and a complete box had 36 packs. As always “Inkworks” guarantees a full base set within a complete counter display box. For “Inkworks”, this card set would be their last tie-in with the James Bond company EON, as the next series of trading cards will be manufactured by Rittenhouse Archives Inc.

"TWINE Counter Display Box" & "The three Casino Chips C1, C2 & C3"

The card series was promoted with a superbly designed double sided sell sheet and not less than three different promotion cards. The new series of trading cards was announced for November 1999. At the same time “Inkworks” was very proud to announce their fifth anniversary in the world of James Bond. The sell sheet depicted Pierce Brosnan on a red background together with some movie shots. The reverse was stuffed with information regarding the new set of cards. To help selling the cards on the retail market, “Inkworks” added in every counter display box a Casino Chip. There are three different Casino Chips to collect, numbered as C1, C2 & C3. The production for each Casino Chip was strictly limited to only 3000 pieces. Regardless to this limitation, the Casino Chips frequently pop-up on eBay and other on-line retail shops at acceptable prices.

"Dealer Exclusive Sell-Sheet"

Exclusive for the release of "The World Is Not Enough" trading cards, a specially designed 1.5" round "Casino Chip" was created by "Inkworks". This 1.5" round chip was given to distributors to promote the release. The chip features an image of James Bond on the front & is Gold Foil stamped "AP" on the back. The chip comes in an original marketing box which is a standard black cardboard jewellery box with an official "Inkworks" embossed gold sticker on the front.

"Promo Chip "Reverse"

Also available was a Lucite Chipset and card number #001 mounted in plexiglass console. See pictures below. Only one-hundred of these sets where produced by "Lucite". In 2023 it came to my attention that there was also a Lucite Chipset with AP chips inside.

Promotion card P1 is the most common one and shows the advance poster, on the card reverse they also announced their fifth anniversary celebration with James Bond. Promotion card ML1 was distributed through Suncoast Video, the card depicts the same still that you can compose with the first set of chase cards. The third promotion card numbered as DW1 was only available in the UK and shows a still of Pierce Brosnan holding a Walther P99 handgun with silencer.

If it’s not broken why fix it, so the chase and autographed cards returned with this set, again it contained three exiting chase levels. The first chase set comprises of nine cards, the nine cards together compose a puzzle depicting a still of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond and the two leading Bond girls, Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards. Numbered from B1 thru B9 and randomly inserted in 1/11 packs, this chase set was titled as “Bond Is Back” and displayed here below.

“Bond Is Back” Chase Card Set

The second level of chase cards was titled as the “Q-Branch”. The set existed of six cards each showing a gadget that was used by James Bond. The gadgets were issued by the quartermaster “Q” and his assistant “R”. The card reverse explained each gadget in detail, the Q-boat, his Omega Seamaster wristwatch, the BMW Z8 etc… It’s also in this movie that “Q” announced his successor to 007, “then that makes you R” replies Bond. Sadly it was to be Desmond Llewellyn last movie as “Q” following his death in a car accident. The Q-cards were only distributed in 1/17 packs and numbered from Q1 thru Q6.

“Q-Branch” Chase Card Set

As usual the third chase level contains only one card, the “Shaken Not Stirred” card. A very rare card only inserted in 1/108 packs or three counter display boxes. The card reverse displayed all the one-liners during the casino scene where Bond requests to meet Valentin Zukowsky. The card is titled “Shaken Not Stirred”, numbered as S1 and beautiful designed as if it was coming out of Maurice Binder’s hands, the leading girls, flames and dancing girl silhouettes seen through a Martini glass. Stunning!

"Shaken Not Stirred" Chase Card S1

Like the previous card serie some of the packs contained a redemption card. All of the redemption cards were numbered as R1. Again you could exchange your redemption card for one of the six new autographed cards, the cards were personally signed by, Denise Richards as Dr. Christmas Jones, Dame Judi Dench as M, Desmond Llewelyn as Q, Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny, Goldie as Bull and Serena Scott Thomas as Dr. Molly Warmflash. The front of the redemption card mentioned “Congratulations” and depicted artwork of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. Printed on the reverse of the autographed cards is a small biography on the actor or actresse depicted in the front. The autograph cards were not mentioned on the sell-sheet. I suspect they came as a high value surprise to many of the card collectors.

“The Autograph Cards”

Here below an unsigned autograph card A2. This card is very rare and hard to find. I discovered this picture on eBay in April 2019, 20 years after the card set release.

"Unsigned A2 Autograph Card"

As always, an exclusive collectors binder was manufactured, this time in a scuba black vinyl embossed with the famous 007 Gunbarrel logo and the movie title printed in red lettering. Personally I don’t like this design, they should have used the “Flame girl” design that EON productions created to promote the movie.

"Redemption Card"
“The World Is Not Enough Exclusive Binder"

Here below another sample of an uncut sheet containing all the chase cards from the "The World Is Not Enough" combined with some cards from the "Sleepy Hollow" trading card set. I must say here that "Inkworks" has a very efficient way of managing their paper.

"Chase Card Uncut Sheet"

Also available and a nice touch to any card collection was the nine card uncut sheet " Bond Is Back". Sadly they only printed 500 pieces worldwide. These uncut sheets are very nice items to be framed.
